Background:

The European Union Integrated Border Management Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM Libya) is present in Libya since April 2013.

Job Description

The Assistant to Press and Public Information Officer will support the PPI department in providing high quality support to the international staff in implementation of the EUBAM mandate. This position reports to the PPIO Officer, or the designated alternate, and is responsible for:

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Providing the PPIO team with accurate and timely information about breaking news and latest incidents, especially related to EUBAM and border related issues
  • Translating all types of texts including Laws, newsletters, media reports, press releases etc. into English, monitoring and summarising news and public perception of major developments in the country through social media channels
  • Preparing a daily media summary
  • Maintaining the Mission’s website and social media presence (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn), editing video programmes
  • Translating all types of texts including, Factsheets, Press releases, Newsletters, EUBAM website contents both new and existing etc. from English to Arabic and publishing them on the website
  • Providing photographic and written contents for newsletter and website articles
  • Maintaining professional contacts with national journalists
  • Performing interpretation in liaison and consecutive mode, from English to Arabic and vice-versa, in meetings with national journalists
  • Assisting and supporting the Press and Public Information Officer, and all other PPIO colleagues, as necessary
  • Performing general press office administrative duties including receiving calls, arranging meetings, scanning, photocopying and documenting the files of the Press Office
  • Maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality when dealing with assigned materials, and all EUBAM information
  • Performing any other related duties as instructed by the line manager or designated alternate

Qualifications and experience

  • University degree in journalism, media, politics, international relations, and/or a language related discipline
  • A minimum of 4 years of media management, journalism, civil society advocacy or public relations experience at progressively increasing levels of expertise, of which ideally 1 year working within a multi-national and/or international environment or organisation
  • Excellent Arabic and English oral and written drafting skills
  • Excellent computer skills including evidence of excellence in website and on-line social media management
  • Good photographic skills
  • Knowledge of European Security Defence Policy (ESDP) Missions and EUBAM Libya activities in Tripoli is desirable

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, in difficult circumstances, as well as ability to communicate with personnel at operational and strategic levels
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, complete assigned tasks within strict deadlines and consistently maintain quality and accuracy in the performance of duties
  • Meticulous time keeping, ability and willingness to work additional hours if required
  • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • Mandatory requirement to pass the security clearance and medical checks
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe and hazard free working environment and the highest standards of personal appearance at all times
  • Additional language skills are desirable
